Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2011:

Voroklini opens up the European mtb season

On Sunday Cyprus Sunhine Cup opens up the European mountainbike season at Voroklini. Title defenders Jan Skarnitzl (Cze) and Annika Langvad (Den) are part of the race as well as some other interesting names.

Looking back in 2010 the opener of Cyprus Sunshine Cup was decisive for the overall classement. Jan Skarnitzl took the victory in men’s category and in women’s it was Annika Langvad. Both showed up with a pretty good performance and there was nobody to overtake them.

But at least most of the participants are not looking on the overall. They try to come into race mood to find the intense rhythm is need for a cross country competition.

Anyway it will be interesting to see how the winter training has effected the pro riders from all over the world. In women’s competition there are 30 riders on the registration list, lead by Annika Langvad, Slovakian Janka Stevkova (2nd place in 2010) and Blaza Klemencic from Slovenia.

If the also expected Alexandra Engen (Swe) is able to take part is not yet known. It was told that she had some health problems at the moment.

It will be exciting to see how Anneke Beerten is doing. The Four-Cross world cup winner from Netherland will also take part in Voroklini’s cross country competition.

Jan Skarnitzl will have a lot of strong contenders in men’s competition. On the 6,01 kilometer course not far from Larnaka, he has to fight against his Czech countrymate Jiri Friedl and the whole Rabobank Giant Team, lead by Adam Craig (USA), Fabian Giger (Sui) and Henk-Jaap Moorlag (NED). Additional there are Anneke Beertens team mates at Bart Brentjens Milka Trek team. This is for example Jukka Vastaranta (Fin) and Jelmer Pietersma (Ned).

U23 vice world champion Thomas Litscher (Sui) has been set on the list and he should be also a serious contender for a place on the podium. Then we have some Germans in the field of about 70 riders. Torsten Marx, Stefan Sahm and René Tann are some of them.
