Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2011: Title defenders confirm
Annika Langvad and Jan Skarnitzl have confirmed to defend their overall titles at Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2011. The Danish and the Czech will do the three part mountainbike series on the mediterranean island. The teams Milka Trek-Brentjens and Rabobank Giant also announced to be on Cyprus competing in the Sunshine Cup.
10 months ago, Annika Langvad showed a pretty good performance, taking the win in Vorokoklin and Afxentia stage race as well. Regarding her complete season Langvad took this shape throughout the year and in August she grabbed bronze medal at the marathon world championships.
So it is no surprise that she will repeat the pattern, taking Cyprus Sunshine Cup as launching ramp for the competition year 2011. Annika Langvad meanwhile changed to German squad Easton Rockets and the male winner of the orange jersey, Jan Skarnitzl, also changed his racing clothes. The 24 years old Czech now rides for Rubena -Specialized Birrel team.
Winning the opener at Voroklini and then two times third placed, he took the overall and in the following he jumped from world ranking 48 to 15.
That’s a very good reason to do the same program in 2011 as the year before.
Team Milka Trek-Brentjens also gave notice to come to Cyprus. There are young Polish biker Marek Konwa and Finn Jukka Vastaranta in the Dutch team of 96 Olympic champion Bart Brentjens.
The Dutch rivals from Rabobank Giant announced to take part in CSC ’11 as well. Swede Emil Lindgren has a lot of Cyprus experiences and in 2009 he was successful by winning the overall title. Former u23 European champion Fabian Giger (Sui) is riding for Rabobank Giant and on his side is also Henk-Jaap Moorlag and now junior world champion Michiel van der Heijden.
Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2011, co-organized by Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) and Cyprus Cycling Federation (CCF), offers same three races as this year. Changes will be made on Afxentia stage race. Second days marathon will start in the village Kapedes. That adds 4,2 kilometer and 100 meter altitude to the former 42 kilometer.
Project management of BikinCyprus company worked out some special deals for the participants. Cyprus airways as a supporter of the mountainbike cup offers 20 per cent discount and also some hotels are supporting the series by giving special prices.
At every event there will be an open category. At the Afxentia stage race the second day point to point race is the one which is open also for amateur mountainbikers.
