Three days Afxentia stage race on Cyprus island in 2011 first time will run in the HC category. The 2nd leg of Cyprus Sunshine Cup is world wide the only stage race for single riders in this status and the winner will earn 160 points for the world ranking.
In these days world cycling federation UCI confirmed the Afxentia stage race as HC (Hors Classe) category. This information from UCI’s headquarter in Aigle, Switzerland made the organizers happy. Since years the passionated people of Bikin’ Cyprus Eventmanagement (together with Cyprus Tourism Organization CTO) put a lot of energy into the improvement of Cyprus Sunshine Cup.
“To get the HC category for the Afxentia stage race is a great honor for us and it rewards the work we have done the years before. I hope we are able to make one more step in 2011 showing that we deserve it”, chief organizer Mike Hadjioannou commented when he was informed.
To have a race in HC category means more prize money and more points for the riders. 160 points are given for the winner of the stage race. Except world championships, world cup and continental championships 2011 nowhere one can get more points. That has a meaning not only for the world ranking but also for the Olympic qualification system for nations.
Except the Cape Epic in South Africa, which is a stage race for two men teams, there is no other stage race in this category. So Afxentia is the only HC stage race in the world in which single riders are competing.
Cyprus Sunshine Cup includes Afxentia and two one day races at Voroklini and Amathous. Both are noted in category C1. So within two weeks one rider can earn a maximum of 280 points.
The Afxentia stage race is a three days event, with time trial, marathon and cross country race in the beautiful Macheras Mountains. The race has got its name from Gregoriou Afxentiou, a Cypriot freedom fighter who died in Macheras Mountains not far from the events side.
