The 9th edition of the Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2015 will have two idols of the Olympic cross country discipline at the start line. Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjaa from Norway and German Manuel Fumic announced their participation in the four days Afxentia stage race (26/2 to 1/3), which is open for licensed and non-licensed mountain bikers.

Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjaa, the most successful cross country and marathon rider ever, decided to repeat what she did this year for the first time. In 2014 the 41 years old, nine times world champion, gave her debut with training on the island as well as racing the Cyprus Sunshine Cup.

Obviously the rider from Multivan-Merida Biking team could enjoy and did it successfully. “Cyprus was good for me this year and will be a good preparation for the season 2015 as well. In my opinion Cyprus offers good training for a cross country rider and it is a likeable place to be”, Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjaa explains, “good people, good food, nice hospitality and a lot more sun than back home in February.”

For 2015, the Norwegian will use Cyprus to be ready for the stage race Cape Epic in South Africa.

Manuel Fumic hunting points and shape

Manuel Fumic has also set the Cyprus Sunshine Cup on his schedule. The German, vice world champion in 2013 and three times Olympian, missed last year’s edition of the Afxentia stage race. The Cannondale pilot flew to the Mediterranean island, but he was sick and therefore had to cancel his start.

“I want to have some competition before I leave for the US for some races there. So the Afxentia stage gives me the chance to enter my race mode. In my experience you can meet a lot of strong riders there, who are already in a good shape. In the same time, I have an eye on the world ranking points, which I can earn in the SHC listed stage race, for sure”, Manuel Fumic gives a statement on his reasons to be part of the Cyprus Sunshine Cup.

Participation in the Cyprus Sunshine Cup is also possible for amateur riders. The 18th edition of the Afxentia stage race is open for hobby mountainbikers, competing side by side with Olympic champions as Dahle-Flesjaa or international medal winners as Fumic. And away from racing, they can also enjoy the sun and the trails on the island, collecting some training miles while crossing the route of the idols!
