Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2016 two weeks before the start announces some changes on the courses of the Afxentia stage race (25-28). Day 1 and day 3 undergo some adjustments. Meanwhile organizing agency Bikin’ Cyprus start to support the Hans Rey charity project Wheels4life.
The 20th edition of the Afxentia stage race will follow the same four days structure as the two years before. But the riders out of more than 20 different countries will find a change in the opening Lefkara time trial and also on stage 3, the point to point race in Lythrodontas.
For the time trial, the race direction goes in the opposite direction. Start and finish stays at Lefkara central square. But first the riders will head to the top of the hill above the village, from where they start descending in a one kilometre single trail. This was used to go up in the previous editions.
At the end of the downhill, the riders enter the narrow stone build roads of Lefkara, with tight turns and stairs going down to the finish. The course is 4,1 kilometre and has a total ascent of 157 meters. At the top of the hill, you can have a pretty nice overview of the village. Probably the top riders during the time trial will keep their eyes on the course, to catch the seconds. Maybe only the amateurs will take this chance.
"As we always strive to challenge the top riders of the world as well to make the stages more attractive and spectacular, we saw the opportunity to race in the small alleys of one of the nicest villages in Cyprus. To make this happen we had to change the biggest part of the time trail, but kept the interesting section in it" explains Savvas Anastasiou.
Adding abandoned trail from Kionia peak
The Technical Director of the race, has also done some work on stage 3. “Last year, in cooperation with the Forest Department and local mountain bikers, we were able to clean another abandoned ancient trail and increase the riding options of the mountain”, says Anastasiou.
The new trail is at least as fun as the other long trails of the area and offers lots of flow and scenic views to the Nicosia plain. During this years Afxentia edition, riders will be descending that trail on their way down from the Kionia peak. That means on the other hand, that the Kakokefalos trail, which was used for a long time, has to be left out. “It was a hard decision to leave out the Kakokefalos trail, “Anastasiou confesses, “but we are sure that the riders will also have lots of fun riding the new trail. It provides a lot of flow."
Another minor organizational change concerns at the last day. The award ceremony then for the first time will be held at Lythrodontas village, instead of Kapedes.
Hans “No Way” Rey and his way to help: Wheels 4 Life
It’s fun to ride a bike, on the beautiful trails of Cyprus and elsewhere. But in a lot of regions around the world, Bicycles are more than that. They are helpful to manage daily challenges, helpful for mobility and transport. They are “Wheels 4 Life”.
That’s how Hans Rey and his wife Carmen named her non-profit charity, which provides bicycles to people in both primitive and remote areas, with no access to public transportation. Wheels4Life helps people to use bikes as means of transport to improve their quality of life. For example to go to school, to reach medical help or a job. That may change their life.
Already more than 8000 bikes were delivered to people in 30 different countries.
The Bikin’ Cyprus event agency with the Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2016 starts to support Wheels4Life. “There are not many charities for bikes and since this is the main core of our activities, we thought, that it makes sense for us to help in this direction”, Bikin’ Cyprus CEO says Mike Hadjioannou. “We as cyclists can understand this need and we are willing to help the scope of Wheels4Life.”
Hans “No Way” Rey, as he is known in the mountain bike scene, is a former world trial world champion, but also famous as Freeride pioneer and extreme mountain biker.
