The Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2016 gets some more attraction. Two Cyclo Cross heroes now registered for the Afxentia stage race from 25 to 28 of February. Former world champion Mathieu van der Poel and world cup overall second Eva Lechner enrich the start list of the 20th edition.

There were already some rumours within the cycling scene, about Mathieu van der Poel (BKCP-Corendon) to race on Cyprus, when he announced that the set his sight on the Olympics. The Cyclo Cross world champion of 2015 and four times world cup winner this winter, wants to compete in Rio de Janeiro – in the mountain bike race.

The only 20 years old Dutch is a huge talent, but in the Olympic cross country discipline, he has no points. So that’s a good reason to take a flight to the sunny island and race the high donated SHC category, in which the Afxentia is registered.

While Mathieu van der Poel was junior world champion on the road, but has no credits in mountain biking. This does not count for Eva Lechner (Luna Pro Team). She has a quite successful cyclo cross season behind her, finishing second in the world cup overall and won one round. But at least, she is better known as a mountain bike rider, three times world cup winner, worlds bronze medallist in 2011 and silver medallist at the Europeans in 2015.

The 30 years old Lechner starts her mountain bike season on Cyprus, of course also with already with an eye on the Olympics.

Further more Germany sends four times National Champion Moritz Milatz (Kreidler Werksteam), another rider of world class format.
